AG Transitions and Campaign Moves Across States; New SG in VA

  • Alaska: Alaska AG Treg Taylor announced that he will step down from his position on August 29, 2025. Appointed in 2021, Taylor is the third-longest-serving AG in the state’s history.
  • Georgia: Tanya Miller, a state Representative and attorney, announced that she is running for Georgia AG. She is the second Democrat to enter the race; former House Minority Leader Bob Trammell is also running. Incumbent AG Chris Carr is not seeking reelection, but is instead running for Georgia governor in 2026.
  • New Hampshire: New Hampshire Governor Kelly Ayotte has decided to renominate AG John Formella to another four-year term. AG Formella was appointed to his current position in 2021. Governor Ayotte had previously announced that she would not be renominating him.
  • Texas: Chip Roy, a Republican Congressman and former prosecutor, announced that he will run for Texas AG. Roy is the fourth Republican to enter the field, which already includes state Senators Joan Huffman and Mayes Middleton, as well as former U.S. DOJ attorney Aaron Reitz. Texas AG Ken Paxton is running in the 2026 U.S. Senate primary against incumbent Senator John Cornyn.
  • Virginia: Virginia AG Jason Miyares has announced that Kevin Gallagher has been named Solicitor General of Virginia. Gallagher succeeds previous Solicitor General Erika Maley.
