  • Arizona AG Kris Mayes and D.C. AG Brian Schwalb submitted a letter to the FDA in support of other state AG’s 2022 petition for reconsideration of a multistate petition seeking FDA actions on toxic heavy metals in food intended for babies and young children.
  • In the letter, AGs Mayes and Schwalb urged the FDA to issue guidance on testing for lead and other toxic heavy metals in baby food without further delay, arguing that recent nationwide recalls of popular baby food purees due to elevated levels of lead might have been avoided had the FDA issued guidance as requested in the reconsideration petition.
  • We have previously reported on the original multistate petition and earlier comment letters from other state AGs urging the FDA to issue guidance on testing for toxic metals in baby food, which also reflects broader AG concern for contaminants and additives to food and beverage that may have adverse health effects.
