The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) announced it has updated its Aquatic Life Benchmarks Table.
State, tribal, and local governments utilize such benchmarks in their interpretation of water monitoring data.
EPA’s Office of Water uses aquatic toxicity data to develop ambient water quality criteria that can be adopted by states and tribes to establish water quality standards under the Clean Water Act.
Water Quality Criteria (“WQC”) are ambient water quality conditions that are deemed protective of the uses established for a waterbody. States are required by the Clean Water Act to adopt WQC protective of the designated uses. The WQC must specify the maximum concentration of pollutants that may be present in the water without impairing its suitability for certain uses.
The September 2019 update includes the following newly registered pesticides and their degradates:
- Flutianil;
- Pydiflumetofen;
- Transfluthrin; and
- Fenpicoxamid (XDE-777)
The EPA announcement also identifies new values for previously registered pesticides and their degradates undergoing registration review.
