The American Biogas Council (“ABC”) released an analysis reviewing the growth in United States of landfill biogas facilities in terms of investment and energy production over the past five years.

A state-by-state analysis is included.

Biogas is an energy-rich gas produced by anaerobic decomposition or thermochemical conversion of biogas. Landfills for municipal solid waste are a source of biogas which is produced naturally by anaerobic bacteria within the landfills.

The ABC analysis states that as of August 2025, the U.S. has 589 landfill biogas facilities. This is stated to be an 18.5% increase since 2020. The official biogas capture capacity from landfills is stated to total 521 billion cubic feet.

The biogas state profile for Arkansas indicates that eight biogas capture systems are currently operating in the state. The report also projects potential additional biogas production for the state from systems involving:

  • Landfills.
  • Agriculture.
  • Food waste.
  • Wastewater.

The projection addresses the following categories:

  • Economic benefits.
  • Climate benefits.
  • Recycling benefits.
