  • A bipartisan coalition of 37 AGs sent a letter to leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives opposing a federal ban against state-level regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
  • In the letter, the AGs argue that an amendment to the federal budget reconciliation bill—which would impose a 10-year prohibition on states from enforcing state laws or regulations addressing AI and automated decision-making systems—would stop states from preventing known harms associated with AI, deprive consumers of reasonable protections, and leave AI largely unregulated in the face of Congressional inaction.
  • The AGs request that Congress reject the AI moratorium language in the budget reconciliation bill.
  • We have previously covered other AI-related AG actions, including a letter from 21 Republican AGs urging Congress to ban DeepSeek AI from state government devices; Texas AG Ken Paxton’s investigation into DeepSeek’s privacy practices; and AI advisories and guidance from California AG Rob Bonta and New Jersey AG Matthew Platkin, respectively.
