Key point: Twenty-three privacy and AI-related bills are set for appropriations committee hearings on August 29 — the deadline for bills to advance out of fiscal committees — while three other bills have passed out of committee and are set for floor votes.
We are currently tracking 31 privacy and AI-related bills that previously crossed chambers prior to the legislative deadline. With the California legislature closing on September 12, we will be providing weekly updates on the progress of these bills.
1. What’s New
The California legislature returned from its summer recess on August 18. As set forth below, 23 of the 31 bills we are tracking are set for appropriations committee hearings on August 29. That is the last day for fiscal committees to meet and report bills to the floor.
Meanwhile, three bills have passed out of committee and are on third readings: AB 566 (opt-out preference signal), SB 361 (data brokers), and SB 259 (Fair Online Pricing Act).

The following privacy-related bills are scheduled for August 29 hearings in the Senate Appropriations Committee:
