Summary
As an update to our earlier blog “Coronavirus – Top 5 HR tips for UK employers”, set out below is a brief overview of the recent measures that have been announced by the UK government.
The UK government has previously confirmed that, in relation to coronavirus sickness absence, statutory sick pay (SSP) will be paid from the first day of absence (rather than the fourth).
Today, the UK government (in its budget announcement) has gone further and confirmed that:
- employers with less 250 employees will be refunded up to 14 days SSP in respect of employees who are off sick due to the coronavirus; and
- medical certificates for employees who are self-isolating due to the coronavirus can be obtained from 111 and such employees will be entitled to SSP.
