On September 9, the California Privacy Protection Agency, along with the attorneys general of California, Colorado and Connecticut, announced an investigative sweep of businesses that may have failed to accept consumers’ requests to opt out of sharing their personal information via the global privacy control browser setting. The state coalition contacted businesses suspected of noncompliance and requested immediate adherence to state privacy laws, as the coalition continued its education efforts on using the browser feature. The notice also outlined how consumers can opt out of sharing their personal data, either by enabling the global privacy control feature or by submitting requests directly to businesses. State laws require businesses to provide clear opt-out links and prohibit them from conditioning opt-out requests.
