Ellipsis Health, a digital health startup based in San Francisco, recently announced that it raised $45 million in a Series A-1 funding round led by Salesforce Ventures, CVS Health Ventures, and Khosla Ventures. The funding will be used to further develop Sage, the company’s AI-powered care manager, and expand its use across the healthcare industry.

Developed in response to ongoing staffing shortages and clinician burnout, Sage is designed to help healthcare organizations maintain consistent, empathetic patient engagement between visits. The platform can conduct health risk assessments, post-discharge check-ins and medication reminders, and assist with coordinating transportation, diet, and other routine needs.

According to Ellipsis, what differentiates Sage is its built in “empathy engine,” trained on millions of real clinical conversations. This allows the tool to detect patient sentiment through vocal cues and respond in a natural, conversational tone. Sage is also being tailored to disease-specific use cases in areas like diabetes, oncology, and behavioral health.

The announcement highlights continued interest in AI tools aimed at easing administrative burdens while supporting high-quality patient communication.
