Federal Court Holds There Is No Jurisdiction Over Amazon Logistics for Contracting With an Ohio Trucking Company that Was Involved in a Serious Accident in the State of Texas

This case arises out of a serious motor vehicle accident occurring in Texas with an Ohio trucking company that contracted with Amazon Logistics, Inc. (with numerous other Amazon entities named in the action). The key question was whether by virtue of Amazon utilizing Timur Trucking to provide deliveries on Ohio roadways through what was called the “Relay,” application created jurisdiction against Amazon when Timur “accepted” an assignment to transfer a shipping container from New Mexico to Texas. The court ultimately held that “[t]he passive act of allowing an Ohio trucking company to book an assignment through the Relay application to deliver Amazon goods through two other states is not sufficient in these circumstances to confer specific jurisdiction over the Amazon Defendants.”
