Glass Recycling: Bill Introduced Before the Utah Legislature Mandating Study to Increase Consumption

H.B. 177 has been submitted into the 2025 General Session of the Utah Legislature addressing recycling of glass.

Contents of the Bill include:

  • Defines terms.
  • Requires the Utah Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control (division) to study how to increase the amount of used glass for recycling.
  • Requires the division to report findings and recommendations to the Utah Legislature, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Interim Committee; and
  • Provides a repeal date for the study.

Terms defined in the Bill include:

  • Glass cullet.
  • Material recovery facility.
  • Multi-stream recycling.
  • Recyclable material.
  • Single-stream recycling.

The statewide study of glass recycling is required to address:

  • An inventory of current glass recycling methods.
  • Areas in the state that may benefit from increased glass recycling.
  • Strategies for increasing the amount of glass collected by various types of facilities.
