On June 24, the FHA within HUD issued an RFI seeking public input on the implications of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) lending for housing affordability and stability. Through this RFI, the FHA will seek to better understand how emerging financial products, such as BNPL loans, may impact mortgagees’ evaluation of borrowers’ finances and ability to own a home in the long term. According to the RFI, the rise of BNPL lending raises questions about the potential impact of BNPL loans, which are not currently considered by mortgagees when making FHA loans, on housing affordability and stability. HUD offered 22 specific questions for public input and requested comments on or before August 25.
