The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) issued a June 26th news release announcing a grant to the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment – Division of Environmental Quality (“DEQ”) that it describes as supporting:

. . . a variety of water quality programs, including collaboration between the states of Arkansas and Oklahoma on the Illinois River watershed.

The grant is $95,519 and is being dispersed as multipurpose under a cooperative agreement.

EPA states that pursuant to the cooperative agreement the grant will fund activities that “complement and support existing environmental program grants.” The agency further states that DEQ will use the funds to host a forum to promote and enhance the use of fire as an ecosystem management tool. The specific use will be for the management of crop residue.

The news release also states that the funds will support collaboration between Oklahoma and Arkansas through:

. . . development of a data management system for the Illinois River Watershed Steering Committee.
