Recent scientific research has revealed that women who used the Depo-Provera birth control shot may be five times more likely to develop a form of brain tumors known as meningioma.

Women who were injected with Depo-Provera and diagnosed with brain tumors may be eligible to file a lawsuit and receive compensation.

Continue reading to find out whether you may be eligible to file a lawsuit against Depo-Provera, and how to contact a lawyer and get legal help with your claim.

Depo-Provera Linked to Meningioma Brain Tumors

A March 2024 study published by the British Journal of Medicine (BMJ) found that women who used Depo-Provera for birth control were five times more likely to be diagnosed with cerebral meningioma tumors.

Meningioma is a form of benign, or non-cancerous, tumors that can cause symptoms such as:

  • Blurry vision;
  • Headaches;
  • Numbness; or
  • Seizures

Although meningioma brain tumors are not cancerous, women who develop this health condition after using Depo-Provera may be forced to undergo brain surgery to remove the tumors after being diagnosed, which can place them at risk of additional side effects.

Depo-Provera Litigation Update

Following the publication of the BMJ study linking Depo-Provera to an increased risk of meningioma, the first lawsuit against the manufacturers of Depo-Provera, Pfizer Inc., was filed in October 2024 in California by a woman who was diagnosed with brain tumors after using the birth control shot.

Since the first lawsuit against Depo-Provera was filed, hundreds more women have come forward to take legal action against the makers of the birth control shot after they were diagnosed with meningioma or other side effects.

In February 2025, many of the Depo-Provera lawsuits against Pfizer were consolidated in a federal multidistrict litigation, or MDL, in Florida. Consolidating these claims against Depo-Provera in a single court will help expedite the discovery phase of this litigation and make it easier for women who were injured after using the birth control shot to receive a settlement.

Legal experts have predicted that the number of lawsuits that are filed against Pfizer over Depo-Provera could eventually number into the tens of thousands.

Who Is Eligible to File a Depo-Provera Lawsuit?

In order to file a lawsuit against the makers of the Depo shot, women must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  1. You must have been injected with either Depo Provera, the subcutaneous version known as Depo SubQ Provera 104, or “authorized generic” versions of the Depo shot.
  2. You must have been exposed to Depo-Provera for at least one year. Typically, this involves a total four injections received once every three months.
  3. You must have been diagnosed with cerebral meningioma brain tumors by a doctor.
