Tin Cup Day

Last Tuesday, Mayor Adams, along with other mayors of cities throughout New York State, stated the city’s priorities at the state budget “tin cup day.” Adams advocated for “Axe the Tax for the Working Class” legislation, passage of the Supportive Interventions Act, and reforms to the state’s discovery law, and praised the passage of the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity plan. Beyond budgetary questions, state lawmakers questioned Adams on NYC’s sanctuary city status, and where he stands in the face of new federal policies. Mayor Adams’ full testimony is available here. The Mayors of Albany, Buffalo, and Syracuse focused on AIM (Aid to Municipalities) funding, unrestricted state funds that cities can put toward community needs, like local law enforcement or infrastructure improvements.

Joann Ariola Elected Council Minority Leader

Joann Ariola has been elected as Minority Leader of the New York City Council, when the minority conference voted last Friday. Former Minority Leader Joe Borelli stepped down on January 31 to work at a DC-based lobbying firm. Only three out of five members were present for the vote, technically creating a quorum. Ariola also selected Queens Council Member Vickie Paladino as the new Minority Whip, taking over from Brooklyn Council Member Inna Vernikov.

NYCEDC Releases Applied AI Report

The New York City Economic Development Corporation released a report, “New York City’s Artificial Intelligence Advantage: Driving Economic Growth and Technological Transformation” outlining recommendations and actions for the City’s use of AI. One key element of the plan includes a $3M investment to establish a “NYC AI Nexus,” an initiative designed to facilitate collaboration between startups and local businesses to identify, build, and adopt applied AI solutions. NYCEDC also announced a new partnership with OpenAI.
