The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recently released its 2025 “Patent Scorecard” where it analyzes and ranks companies with large patent portfolios in various industries, including aerospace.

The survey analyzed each company’s U.S. patents and measured four additional metrics. IEEE explains:

Together, the total patents produced by an organization multiplied by its growth, impact, originality, and generality define the organization’s Pipeline Power. In the patent scorecard, organizations are ranked by their Pipeline Power, accounting for both the quality and quantity of their patents.

IEEE also explains that the “aerospace sector has seen dramatic consolidation, with RTX (formerly Raytheon) now encompassing multiple subsidiaries that appear separately on our scorecard.”

RTX placed first in Aerospace with a “patent power” score of more than 1,600. The next highest ranked organizations are United Technologies (part of RTX), GE Aerospace, and Boeing. Overall, Aerospace ranked 11th place among the 14 categories that IEEE analyzed.

The Patent Scorecard is insightful in its attempt to assess the quality of patent portfolios, rather than merely the sheer number of patents, by analyzing metrics like growth, impact, originality, and generality. Well-crafted patent portfolios can provide tremendous value for any aerospace company.
