Property owners should have already received their 2014 property tax statements from the county assessor. The tax statements will identify the assessor’s estimated market value for the owner’s property as of January 2, 2013, and the property tax classification. The value and classification established as of January 2, 2013, will affect the amount of taxes the owner pays this year.
If you believe that either your classification or the valuation stated in your statement is incorrect, you should consider filing a property tax petition with the Minnesota Tax Court. Reductions in value can result in direct cost savings. The deadline for filing a tax petition to challenge the property value or classification is April 30, 2014.
