The firm, Grid Strategies, issued a December 2024 Report titled:
Strategic Industries Surging: Driving US Power Demand (“Report”).
The Report is stated to have been sponsored by Clean Gird Initiative.
The Report undertakes the analysis of projected load growth over the next five years. It projects that five-year load growth will increase five-fold to 122 Gigawatts (“GW”). Further, nationwide electric demand is stated to increase by 15.8% by 2029.
The principal drivers in load growth are stated to be data centers and manufacturing.
The six regions in the United States projected to drive load growth through 2029 include:
- ERCOT (data centers in the Dallas/Fort Worth region, along with oil and gas production).
- Georgia Power (data centers in Atlanta region and some manufacturing).
- PJM (data centers in Northern Virginia, Pennsylvania, and manufacturing in Ohio).
- MISO (relatively low growth rate but makes the top six by virtue of its size, with manufacturing to data centers contributing to forecast demand).
- SPP (load growth is dispersed with current growth focused on oil and gas producing regions [New Mexico, North Dakota] and near-term data center growth [Oklahoma, Missouri]).
- Pacific Northwest (data centers and chip fabrication plants driving growth).
