Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.
HEADLINES
- Congress plans to pass a short-term extension of government funding this week before members return home to campaign until November’s election.
- Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler will testify at oversight hearings in both chambers.
- President Joe Biden will speak at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, and host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.
HOUSE
- The House plans to be in session throughout the week, aiming to pass legislation by midweek to keep the government funded until December 20.
- The Financial Services Committee will hold an oversight hearing tomorrow with Gensler and the rest of the SEC.
- Also tomorrow, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on the State Department’s withdrawal from Afghanistan with Secretary Antony Blinken.

SENATE
- The Senate also will be in session throughout the week, waiting to vote on final passage of the House funding bill ahead of the expiration of current funding September 30.
- The Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will hold a hearing tomorrow with Novo Nordisk CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen regarding the company’s pricing of its products Wegovy and Ozempic.
- Gensler will testify Wednesday at an oversight hearing by the Senate Banking Committee.

WHITE HOUSE
- Today, Biden will meet with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates.
- Tuesday and Wednesday, Biden will be in New York to participate in the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
- Thursday, Biden will host President Zelenskyy of Ukraine for a meeting.
