The Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (“ITRC”) announced the issuance of a guidance document titled:
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons Risk Evaluation at Petroleum-Contaminated Sites (“Guidance”)
ITRC states that the Guidance document was developed to assist state regulators, risk assessors, site managers, and other stakeholders in the evaluation of risks and establishment of cleanup standards at petroleum release sites.
Total petroleum hydrocarbons (“TPH”) is a term used to describe a large family of several hundred chemical compounds that originate from crude oil. It is divided into groups of petroleum hydrocarbons that act alike in soil and water. Such fractions will contain numerous individual chemicals.
ITRC states that the Guidance:

Utilizes historical and current research

Presents the current science and understanding of TPH risk characterization

Provides methods and procedures to evaluate risks and establish cleanup requirements at petroleum release sites
