What Caused the Western Alliance Bank Data Breach?

The Western Alliance Bank data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Western Alliance’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. Evidently, Western Alliance used a third-party software product that contained an unknown vulnerability. In October 2024, an unauthorized party began exploiting that vulnerability, which gave them access to parts of Western Alliance’s systems. As a result, between October 12, 2024 and October 24, 2024, the unauthorized party was able to access certain files containing confidential Western Alliance customer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Western Alliance Bank reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Western Alliance completed this process on February 21, 2025, and while the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On March 14, 2025, Western Alliance Bank sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
